Counsellor - FASD Family Support & Counselling

New Directions is a social service agency offering a wide range of resources and services that foster people’s hopes and dreams in their communities.

 

The FASD Family Support, Education and Counselling Program is one of the many services offered by New Directions. The FASD Program works with families raising children up to age 14 with FASD or confirmed pre-natal exposure to alcohol and identified challenges related to development, behaviour, learning, or sensory based needs. Services involve supporting children, families, and the community to understand the strengths and challenges of FASD and how to work together for better outcomes. 

 

Responsibilities Include:

 

  • Working with children and families living with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), in the community.
  • Providing information, education and strategies related to FASD in the home, and community settings.
  • Advocacy and case management skills utilized re: improving outcomes for individuals with FASD and their families.
  • Working collaboratively with larger systems to co-ordinate services and develop programming
  • Utilize Counselling and clinical skills re: observation, informal assessment, crisis management and intervention.
  • Delivery of presentations/workshops and small group work with caregivers
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Maintain all related documentation and paperwork

 

Qualifications:

 

  • BSW/BA or related social services undergraduate degree such as Family Therapy, Human Ecology, and Indigenous Studies. A combination of related education and experience may be considered
  • Experience working with children and families.
  • Ability to apply an Indigenous perspective and experience (or a decolonizing perspective and experience working with Indigenous people) in their work
  • Knowledge of FASD, child development, and intellectual disabilities an asset
  • Relational-strength based approach, trauma informed lens to service delivery.
  • Circle of Security Parenting training an asset (COS-P)
  • Experience working systemically and, in a community-based setting.
  • Class 5 Driver’s License with access to a safe, reliable vehicle for work purposes
  • Candidates who identify as Indigenous are strongly encouraged to declare during the application process.
  • The successful candidate will be asked to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Search, Child & Adult Abuse Registry Check, and Prior Contact Check. A recent Driver’s Abstract will also be required.

 

 

The salary range for this 70 hour bi-weekly position is $26.28 to $33.90 per hour, (equivalent to $47,829 - $61,698 per annum) dependent upon education and/or experience. A full benefits package (which includes Health, Dental, and Long-Term Disability Benefits) is provided to all full-time, regular employees.

 

 

The successful candidate will be subject to Criminal Record, Child/Adult Abuse Registry, and Prior Contact checks; and must supply a current driver’s abstract.
